Frequently Asked Questions

Is there cell phone service along the trail? Cellular reception for some carriers is available at the Russellville and Nallen trailheads. Cellular reception extends upstream from the Russellville trailhead approximately 1 mile but is very limited or nonexistent along most of the trail. Please be sure to plan for limited and/or no connectivity along the trail.

Why can’t I ride my ATV or side by side on the trail? When the Greenbrier and Fayette County Commissions purchased the rail corridor via land banking, one stipulation was that the corridor could only be used for recreational nonmotorized trail purposes. It has taken several years to develop the Meadow River Rail Trail, but the rails and ties were removed for that purpose. Without the rail trail project, the corridor would likely still be obstructed by rails and ties.

Is the entire Meadow River Rail Trail complete? No, only Phase I is open due to construction that is in progress between Rainelle and the Meadow RIver bridge near Burdette. Plans are being developed to extend the trail further downstream from Nallen.

Can I access the Meadow River along the trail? The rail trail corridor is typically 66 feet wide, which in most locations does not extend to the Meadow River. Areas outside of the 66 feet wide right of way are private property.

What is the gradient of the trail? The Meadow River Rail Trail was developed on a railroad corridor. The trail has typical railroad grade and is not steep.

Are there restroom and camping facilities along the trail? No, restrooms and camping facilities have not been constructed along the trail.

What type of walking surface is the trail constructed of? The Meadow River Rail Trail is constructed with a gravel/aggregate walking surface.

Where should I park? The largest parking area is at the trailhead in Nallen. There are also parking spaces at the Russellville trailhead and on the Fayette County side of Russellville Bridge. There is no access to the upstream side of the Meadow River Rail Trail – Phase I, so there are no parking areas there.

Who owns the Meadow River Rail Trail? The Fayette and Greenbrier County Commissions own approximately 24 miles of corridor from Rainelle, WV to Glade Creek downstream from Nallen, WV. Other sections of the Nicholas, Fayette, and Greenbrier Railroad are owned by others.
